October 2009 - Road Improvement Program Continues

The Town of West New York is currently undertaking an ambitious new program to upgrade its roads, sidewalks and curbs, among several other necessary enhancements. The 2009 Road Improvement Program will result in easier transportation around the town and increased quality of life for West New York residents.

“Maintaining streets is a problem that every town faces,” said Mayor Vega. “With this program in place, West New York residents will get the safety and ease they need from their streets and sidewalks.”

Streets throughout the town are currently being upgraded to comply with new standards, such as improving storm water inlets and manholes. This will result in better drainage and reduce the risk of flooding during storms. Along with other street improvements, the program will make the town an easier place to drive.

Other parts of the town will be enhanced as well. Sidewalks will also receive a needed upgrade -- all corners will soon have ramps to allow disabled residents the accessibility they deserve. Trees that are diseased or damaged, as determined by a New Jersey Certified Tree Expert, will be removed to allow for new tree plantings if the location suits or further sidewalk repair. They will be replaced by specially chosen urban-friendly trees wherever possible. The DPW facility will be reconstructed including new drainage improvements, pavement reconstruction, pavement striping, concrete walkways and fencing with lockable gates.

One Hundred percent of the original construction cost is being paid by various grants, minimizing the impact to the taxpayers. The original scope of the project was also increased by 60% due to this administration’s active procurement of additional grant funding, aggressive bidding by contractors and the weak economy. Even with the large construction scope increase, the Town will stand to pay only twelve percent of the final construction cost due largely to additional secured grant funding.

All of these factors have allowed the town to get significantly more done without burdening taxpayers. Upon completion, the 2009 Road Improvement Program will make it easier to drive, walk and live in West New York, and further Mayor Vega and the Board of Commissioners’ goal of making the town a place residents can take pride in.

Parking Deck Coming Soon...

A new 3 story parking deck that will have 241 parking spaces is scheduled to open in January, 2009. Upon completion, the 62nd Street parking lot will have a combined total of 339 parking spaces. During construction, 35 parking places will remain available.

Much of the work will be done during the summer, when school is out, for safety reasons. During construction, drivers are encouraged to use other municipal parking lots located at 58th and 59th Streets whenever possible.

The West New York Parking Authority is doing everything possible to build this new parking deck quickly and safely, with the least inconvenience to residents and businesses. For additional information, please call the Parking Authority at 201.295.1575.
